Introduction:
Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) / Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common female endocrine disorders.
PCOD is a disease characterized by numerous (poly) cysts (small fluid filled sacs) in the ovaries. Prior to the menstrual phase (periods), the ovary releases the egg which is known as the ovulatory phase. During this phase, the follicles in the ovary get stimulated and only one follicle matures and ultimately ruptures to release the egg. In case of PCOD, multiple follicles mature but none of them rupture thus forming numerous fluid filled cysts.
The principal features are:-
(1) Anovulation, resulting in irregular menstruation, amenorrhoea (no menses), ovulation-related infertility;
(2) Excessive amounts or effects of androgenic (masculinizing) hormones, eventually resulting in acne and hirsutism (excessive hair growth on the body in a male distribution pattern);
(3) Insulin resistance often associated with obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol levels.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Oligomenorrhea (few menstrual periods) or amenorrhea (no menstrual periods).
- Infertility: Difficulty in getting pregnant because of irregular ovulation or failure to ovulate.
- Acne and hirsutism (male pattern of hair growth – usually on the face, chest, back or buttocks).
- Obesity and hyper pigmentation of certain parts of the skin.
- Thinning of hair and hair loss from the head.
What causes PCOD?
The exact cause of PCOD is unknown, but it’s thought to be related to abnormal hormonal levels.
- Resistance to insulin:-
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to control the amount of sugar in the blood. It helps move glucose from blood into cells, where it is broken down to produce energy. Insulin resistance means the body’s tissues are resistant to the effects of insulin. The body therefore has to produce extra insulin to compensate. High levels of insulin cause the ovaries to produce too much testosterone hormone, which interferes with the development of the follicles (the sacs in the ovaries where eggs develop) and prevents normal ovulation. Insulin resistance can also lead to weight gain, which can make PCOD symptoms worse because having excess fat causes the body to produce even more insulin.
- Hormone imbalance:-
Many women with PCOD are found to have an imbalance in certain hormones, including:
- Raised levels of testosterone –
A hormone often thought of as a male hormone, although all women normally produce small amounts of it - Raised levels of luteinising hormone (LH) –
A hormone that stimulates ovulation, but may have an abnormal effect on the ovaries if levels are too high - Low levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) –
A hormone that helps reduce the effect of testosterone - Raised levels of prolactin (only in some women with PCOD) –
A hormone that stimulates the breast glands to produce milk in pregnancy.
The exact reason why these hormonal changes occur is not known. It’s been suggested that the problem may start in the ovary itself, in other glands that produce these hormones, or part of the brain that controls their production. The changes may also be caused by the resistance to insulin.
- Genetics:-
PCOD sometimes runs in families. If any relatives, such as your mother, sister or aunt, have PCOD then the risk of you developing it is often increased. This suggests there may be a genetic link to PCOD, although specific genes associated with the condition have not yet been identified.
Homoeopathic Approach in treating PCOD:
Most cases of PCOD are often associated with a psychosomatic cause and Homoeopathy helps in treating such causes and removing them from the root level. The stress levels for every woman are so high that, in turn it leads to the hormonal imbalance thus causing PCOD in them. There have been many researches made with regards to PCOD and homoeopathy and it is a well proven fact that homoeopathy is highly suggested in treating PCOD with a definite cure.
PCOD treated in the conventional method is usually with the help of hormonal supplements etc which have a temporary effect as long as the medicines are being taken. Homoeopathy helps in targeting the root cause of the problem and thereby treats PCOD from within. The main aim and objective of Homoeopathy has been to treat a person individually and relieve him of his symptoms from within.
Since it is known that the root cause of PCOD is the disturbed hormonal functioning of the body, it can be easily perceived that this constitutional disorder will require constitutional approach towards its correction and eventually cure.
The homoeopathic treatment for PCOD is based on an extensive case study of the patient with regards to her characteristic symptoms, genetic predisposition, and her mental state. The total time taken for the treatment differs from person to person depending on the duration, intensity and frequency of the suffering, maintaining causes, susceptibility and general health of the patient.
Homoeopathic medicines act at the root level and thus bring back deviations of hormonal system back to normalcy and in many cases abolish the need for conventional hormonal supplements, thereby avoiding their side-effects.
It is therefore advisable to choose Homoeopathy for curing your PCOD because it treats the illness from within and removes it at its root level with a long term relief and without any side effects.
How Dr. Neha Seth can help you with your PCOD?
Dr. Neha Seth believes in giving the patient immediate relief with a shorter period of treatment and a definite cure. The prime line of treatment is to consider every disease to be a result of an allergy. The patient is first asked to get her Serum IgE levels done. The Serum IgE levels would be high in every patient. To know the allergen that is causing the disease, an allergy test is done. There are two types of allergy tests that are done – a blood test and a skin test. Usually the skin allergy test is asked for; reason being it costs 1/10th the cost of the blood test. With the help of the allergy test, the allergen is identified and treated accordingly. The patient is immediately asked to stop consuming that food item which is the primary allergen. Since the maintaining and the causative factors are now known, homoeopathy works wonderfully once these causes are removed. The patient can therefore see the decrease in the complaints she suffered during each menstrual cycle.
Thus, Dr. Neha Seth can help you with your PCOD and definitely cure it giving you a long time relief from the severe pain and trouble.
